The Indivisible Atomo

The Indivisible Atomo was Pedro J Baez’s first solo show in New York, presented by the artist led collective Subjective at Lume Studios on Broadway in March 2024. Jenya photographed the opening and cut the vertical film that carried the show on social. Baez’s largest paintings to date hung the length of the room with limited edition sculptures and digital works between them, and Atomo, the character he has drawn for most of his working life, stood on a plinth in the middle of it. Doors opened on 15 March and the work stayed up through the weekend.

A room that normally holds events was hung as a gallery for three days, each painting lit on its own and one space turned over to a projected sky. That gives a photographer two jobs in the same night. The work has to be recorded cleanly, square to the wall and colour true, because those frames are what the artist and the gallery use afterwards. Then the room fills and the job changes: people in front of the paintings, the scale of the canvases read against a body, the artist talking to the people who came for him.

Lume Studios introduced the character in its release as one “representing that which cannot be divided,” a figure that “exists somewhere between the physical world and subconscious mind as a vessel for exploration and discovery of unseen worlds.” Baez works across painting, sculpture, digital drawing, 3D animation and tattooing, and the show put those together in one room for the first time in the city. The photographs and the vertical film are the record of the three days that room existed.
