NYC concert photography, shot in the light the show runs on

Concerts photography in one paragraph

A show lights itself, badly and on somebody else’s cue. Jenya Mironov photographs New York sets, launches, and label nights by treating the rig as the key light and waiting for the beat it points at the artist: the Cashear launch under a wall of orange, Metro Boomin’ in a production room, The Killer Agency behind a projected wordmark in a red wash. Nothing is lit from the front, so the colour on stage is the colour that comes back. The floor gets covered as hard as the stage, because a set with no crowd in front of it does not read as a show.

Not on the stage. Flash flattens the lighting design and it is usually the one thing the production team asks you not to do. The frames are made on the rig’s own colour, which means waiting for the wash to land rather than overriding it.

Whatever the room runs on. Some of these nights are open floor and some hold to the first three songs from a pit, and the coverage plan says up front what is possible under each, so nobody is surprised by what is missing afterwards.

Always. The set list is the easy half. Phones up, hands up, the bar, the line outside: that is the part a promoter or a brand can post, and it is what proves the room was full.
